Job Summary:
The Assistant Director is responsible for managing and supervising the Upward Bound advising staff, summer residential staff and office staff for the Oakland and Hayward grants. The Assistant Director is also responsible for the following responsibilities which include (but not limited to) the following: supervising daily Upward Bound programing and operations, administering the Summer Food Service Program, supervising the summer residential program, and meeting with Upward Bound partners, connecting students to community resources. The Assistant Director meets with district administrators and personnel at our target school sites. The Assistant Director shall have full signatory powers in the absence of the Director. This person reports to the UB Senior Director.
Full Job Description:
Hire, supervise and train advising staff, instructional staff, and tutors for academic year and summer session
- Weekly check-in meetings with tutors and instructors during summer residential program
- Work at target schools (Tennyson, Oakland, Castlemont and Fremont High School) Tuesday through
- Thursday during the academic year and meet with target school administrators
- Create, develop, and implement curriculum for college readiness workshops, Saturday Sessions and
- summer academic experience
- Coordinate academic component during summer residential - including but not limited to study hall and academic workshops
- Track report cards and monitor participant progress through graduation
- Disseminate Department of Education updates and guidelines as well as implement federal guidelines (EDGAR)
- Administer and manage Summer Food Service Program and process
- Support with managing the budget each fiscal year
- Prepare weekly, monthly and annual reports
- Advise participants in personal, college and career opportunities
- Participate in the preparation of grant funding proposals, applications for continuation funding, and annual performance report for the DOE
- Monitor the project's objectives for successful outcomes and complete written evaluations on participants for Academic Year and Summer Component
- Facilitate orientation visits and chaperone college tours
- Outreach to the community and organizations for workshops and collaboration
- Meet with each staff member individually on weekly basis
- Meet with high school counselors
- Track alumni
- In the absence of the Director, assume signatory responsibilities
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
- Master degree preferred in Administration, Education, Counseling, Psychology, or Project Management
- 5 years of experience in student services working with with low-income, first generation students
- Previous supervisory experience highly preferred.
- Experience working with state and federal programs.
- Preference will be given to candidates who share a life experience similar to TRIO eligible students and/or who have experience in working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds
Additional skills, knowledge, and abilities needed for position:
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel
- Knowledge and experience working with tracking databases used within the school districts and program (such as Aeries, studentaccess, etc.)
