Job Summary

The primary duty of this position is to receive, review and respond appropriately to citizens reporting criminal activity and other incidents utilizing the telephone and / or in-person communication to document the information in an official police report in a clear and concise manner. This activity requires inputting information via computer into the appropriate reporting system template in a timely manner.
Additionally, the Patrol Support Technician (PST) in most cases, acts as the first point of contact with the general public regarding criminal related activities. Therefore, the PST must always demonstrate a professional and positive attitude when dealing with individuals and their concerns and who may at times display a less than desirable attitude towards police. Responding to the general public and their concerns will require a sympathetic and caring response under stressful situations via face-to-face and / or telephone contacts.
The position performs queries on the NCIC/CCIC system and communicates and cooperates efficiently with Police dispatch personnel and Police Records Technicians to ensure timely and accurate information is conveyed in a proper manner.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Completes official police reports as required by classifying crimes and documenting information utilizing the NICHE and CAD reporting systems. Police reports are completed for crimes which include but are not limited to following categories: all types of Theft, Burglary, Criminal Mischief, Missing Persons, Runaway Juveniles, Harassment/Domestic Violence, Violation of Restraining Orders, Elder Abuse, Lost Property, Criminal Tampering, Fraud, Graffiti, Littering, Reckless Drivers and Suspicious Incidents. Screens information obtained from callers to determine if a police report will be taken, or if police response is necessary.
  • Conducts interviews of victims and witnesses who may be upset, irate, or in a state of crisis. Maintains confidentiality with information received in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Assists LPD Agents by querying license plates in the CCIC/NCIC system to complete parking tickets.
  • Coordinates and assists with Police Records personnel by entering identifying information into the NCIC/CCIC system regarding various crimes and incidents including Missing Persons and Runaway Juveniles.
  • Maintains knowledge of state statutes, municipal statutes, and traffic laws, in order to determine the nature of a crime for reporting purposes.
  • Is prepared to testify in court utilizing information obtained from victim and suspect interviews conducted during initial police report process.
  • Reads and reviews department manuals, NCIC/CCIC newsletters and other informational resources to maintain job knowledge.
  • May assist with the training of co-workers.
  • Must be able to interact with others in a positive and professional manner.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance.

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS
  • Process reports received via the Lakewood Police Department Reporting System.
  • Work well with others to evenly distribute daily tasks and communicate effectively with peers.
  • Greets and assists visitors to the Public Safety Center.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and directs calls to the appropriate Police Department division or City Department.
  • Ability to prioritize duties and complete multiple tasks during heavy workload periods.
  • Assists with various duties as assigned by supervisor.

Essential Qualifications

Education


  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience
  • Six months clerical experience.
  • Law enforcement experience preferred but not required.
  • Computer experience (proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to keyboard at 30 wpm is a preferred qualification.

License/Certification/Registration
  • Ability to obtain NCIC/CCIC certification.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work
